Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Genre

Genre in film is the categorization of films based on their elements. Four examples of genres are horror, action, comedy, and romance. Subgenres is a smaller category that fits inside a main genre. Most of the time this is a mixture of two separate genres. One example is romance-fantasy. I enjoy all of them film genre but the film genre I would say that I mostly is romance, thriller, and drama. I just enjoy all the emotion each genre gives.

The purpose of the assignment is to understand the types of film genres based on their key components, conventions, technical codes and how they play a role in creating film. The choices of genre and subgenre is fiction and thriller. Iconography is visual motifs, symbols, and other elements of a film. Like props, objects, characters, setting, tone and atmosphere, etc. Four examples are ghost, vampires, kissing. and gunslingers. Narrative themes are the telling's of stories through character and different events. Four that associate with my genre/subgenre are survival, love good vs. evil and discovering oneself.

Reflection
The media text that was created was bubble diagram. The purpose of this was for us to create a poster on the subgenre we selected and then documents elements of mise en scene. Me and my partner about the genre and the elements that go into it. We used a laptop to conduct research, which we are intermediate at. In this exercise I learned that each genre has an element that makes its own and how it does that.
